about

This demo cassette was originally released in 1996.

The Brimston' Five (later shortened to Brimstone) was founded in 1996 by Anders, Tobias, Daniel and Henrik. The band started playing together in the basement of Henrik's house (to his parents' joy). Within the year, enough money was saved to record the first demo tape. Being teenagers money was scarce and somehow we ended up choosing to record at Studio Fragg just outside of Norberg, for the (for us back then) quite expensive rate of 300 SEK an hour.

1 500 SEK was raised so 5 hours recording time was all that we could afford. In that time we were to record 7 songs (including set up, mixing and everything!). We blasted through our songs, did overdubs and backup vocals, and by then I think most of our 5 hours were gone. There wasn't any time for retakes or even time to listen to what we had recorded. The engineer was quite stressed during mixing (understandably so), we probably ended up being there for about 7 hours or so (but we only paid for 5, that was all the money we had). The result is thus not as good as if we'd had more time (or recorded less songs). There's some sloppy playing in parts, which we might not even have noticed until afterwards due to the lack of time, and the mix is rushed (the overdubbed rhythm guitar is for example up front in the mix while the lead is somewhere in the back). Never-the-less, we were happy and content with our first recordings as a band. Sure, we learned that recording 7 songs in 5 hours probably wasn't such a good idea but this was our first recordings, done in a real, and for us very fancy, studio!

The cover was printed at Hultebo Tryckeri after hours. Since Tobias' father worked there we got it for free. That's why we included a sticker from the print shop in the demo, just to give something back (free advertising!). Plus, we thought it was cool to have lots of stuff in the package, we even included a chewing gum in each cassette (Juicy Fruit, with only the metallic wrapping left on it). The numbering was done with a semi-automatic stamp they had at the print shop. Can't remember what number we started on but it was in the thousands. The cassette was only made in a few hundred copies (if even that) but again we thought it looked cool with higher numbers.

Here's a very nice review of the demo that appeared just after it was re-released digitally in 2014:
